“My work is an iconography of my passion for the sea”

About

Me

I’m Enric Gener. I was born in 1982 in Menorca, a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Growing up here, surrounded by water, taught me the most important aspect of my work: a natural connection with the sea. Because before photographing it, you have to feel it and understand it—just like learning a language natively, when it becomes an intrinsic part of you without even realizing how it happened.

Years later, I left the island to study art and design at university, where I had my first contact with photography. However, my early work was more focused on design and audiovisual projects in advertising.

Then one day, everything changed. In 2009, I reached a turning point in my life—I left my job and city life behind to embark on the project that has brought us here today: 27MM. I bought an underwater camera and moved to another island. To sustain my passion for underwater photography, I continued working as a freelance designer until, little by little, I managed to turn that passion into a way of life and my profession. This slow learning process was essential in shaping my own style and working model, giving me the freedom to create without the constraints of commercial demands.

This nomadic lifestyle has taken me to many different places, including the Canary Islands, Egypt, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, and Australia—but always close to the sea and always with my camera in hand.

A few years ago, I returned to Menorca, but with a transformed perspective shaped by my experiences abroad. Now, I make the most of the summer on the island, focusing on more local and in-depth work, with a growing commitment to marine conservation and protection. In winter, I continue to travel, seeking out new underwater worlds to explore.

About

My work

My work is a documentary about the real-life happening around me. And this is always linked with the sea in some way.

Formally I try to be simple and clean, without overfill the frame with too many elements, just taking the essentials that push you to live the experience to be underwater in the same landscapes and situations that I’ve been.

My real passion is the sea, and after that, photography. In that order, that it’s so important to me. But also, photography is my partner on this. Sometimes it is so hard to walk, swim or travel with the camera. But other times is the camera that pushes you to walk farther, swim deeper or travel longer.
